Michelle: Why do joints hurt more at night than during the day?
Megan: Joint aches at night are caused by the body’s circadian rhythm which lowers levels of anti-inflammatory hormones like cortisol during evening hours and increases the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines. This shift, combined with reduced movement, allows fluid to pool and joint stiffness to accumulate. Cooler nighttime temperatures can cause the muscles and tendons surrounding the joints to contract, which increases pain sensitivity. Conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or bursitis flare up during these night hours because fewer distractions make the discomfort feel much more noticeable.
