Charlette: I had a UTI and I never want that to happen again. What causes a UTI?

Megan: Urinary tract infections typically occur when bacteria enter the urinary system through the urethra and begin to multiply within the bladder. Women are generally more susceptible. Physical activity, certain types of birth control, or even a weakened immune system can contribute tp this bacterial problem. Anything that obstructs the natural flow of urine such as kidney stones or an enlarged prostate can create an environment where bacteria can more easily stay. The decrease in estrogen during menopause can also alter bacterial balance of the urinary tract. A suppressed immune system from conditions like diabetes can further weaken the body’s ability to fight off harmful bacteria.
