SAN MARCOS, CA – The spring semester rolls on for Cal State San Marcos Athletics as men’s and women’s golf, women’s basketball, softball, baseball and men’s and women’s track & field all compete this week.
On Monday and Tuesday, men’s golf will head down to the Carlton Oaks Country Club in Santee for UCSD’s SoCal Intercollegiate while women’s golf will head up to Pleasanton for the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout hosted by Cal State East Bay.
After concluding its regular season this past Saturday, women’s basketball will host Cal State Dominguez Hills in the first round of the CCAA Tournament on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in The Sports Center.
Softball will head to San Francisco State for a four-game series at SFSU Softball Stadium. Friday’s doubleheader will begin at noon while Saturday’s will get underway at 11 a.m.
Baseball will also be in Northern California as it pays Sonoma State a visit. The four-game series will get underway on Friday at 2 p.m. The series will continue with a doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m. before wrapping up on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Men’s and women’s track and field will split up on Saturday as they compete at UCSD’s San Diego Collegiate Open in La Jolla and Occidental College’s Oxy Distance Carnival Spring Break Classic in Los Angeles. The action in Los Angeles is set to begin at 9 a.m. while the meet in La Jolla will start at 11 a.m.
Ott, Hackson Named CSUSM Student-Athletes of the Month
Women’s basketball’s Akayla Hackson and baseball’s Austin Ott have been named the Cal State San Marcos Student-Athletes of the Month for February 2019.
The CSUSM Student-Athletes of the Month awards are determined through a vote of all Department of Athletics coaches, administrators and staff. Each in-season program nominates a student-athlete to be considered for the award each month.
For the month of February, Hackson led the team with 14.8 points per game, 19 3-point field goals, 13 steals and six blocked shots. She was named the CCAA Player of the Week for Feb. 18-24 after setting a new CSUSM record for most made 3-pointers in a single game with eight at San Francisco State. She also played a major role in helping break the team record for 3-pointers made as she and Kelsey Forrester combined for 12 at SF State.
Ott led the Cougars with a .442 batting average, two triples, 34 total bases, four sacrifice flies while leading the CCAA with 17 runs and 17 RBIs. He went 4-for-4 in back-to-back games against Cal State East Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills. He also posted a grand slam for the Cougars in their win over CSUEB. For his efforts against CSUEB, he was named the CCAA Player of the Week for Feb. 11-17.
Hackson will return to action on Tuesday as the Cougars host the first round of the CCAA Tournament against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 5:30 p.m. Ott and the Cougars will head to Sonoma State for a four-game series beginning on Friday at 2 p.m.
