Sen. Bates’ Statement on Latest  DMV Motor Voter Revelations

Sacraments, CA – Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) released the following statement after the Los Angeles Times published its investigation today that found that the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) launched automatic voter registration despite computer bugs, exposure to hackers, and other problems:

“Today’s revelations are further evidence that the DMV should not be automatically registering voters. While deeply troubling, these revelations are not surprising as the Legislature was told in 2015 that the DMV was ill-equipped to safely administer automatic registration. The best way to prevent a repeat of these problems is to put the choice to register to vote back with the individual.”

Sen. Bates introduced Senate Bill 57 last December to allow people to opt-in for voter registration at the DMV instead of automatically being registered to vote or having to proactively opt-out. By returning the process to an opt-in, the transfer of inaccurate information leading to the registration of ineligible individuals is less likely because the individuals will maintain more control of their information and help protect their privacy.

The San Diego Union-Tribune published Sen. Bates’ op-ed on March 28th explaining how her bill protects election choice and integrity.

The Senate Committee on Elections and Constitutional Amendments is scheduled to consider SB 57 on April 23rd.

Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) represents the 36th Senate District in the California Legislature, which covers South Orange County, North San Diego County, and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.
