Prep Area Teams Still Alive In Playoffs

Shawn Hobson …..Fall high school sports teams in the Vista area continue on this week, with local field hockey, water polo and volleyball teams making runs in the CIF San Diego Section postseason.


The girls field hockey teams at Vista High and Rancho Buena Vista High each landed in the postseason. The Longhorns (14-7-1) begin CIF Open Division tournament competition tonight (Nov. 17) at Torrey Pines (22-2) at 6 p.m., while the Vista Panthers (10-13) travel to Valley Center to take on the Jaguars (16-4-1) in the quarterfinals of the CIF Division I playoffs at 4:30 p.m. The Jaguars won their first-round matchup, 5-0, over El Capitan on Saturday.

There was one area result to report from Monday night. The Mission Vista High School girls field hockey team fell 1-0 at Helix High in a CIF-SDS Division II quarterfinal matchup. The Timberwolves (12-10) won their first-round matchup, 7-0, over Southwest Saturday (Nov. 14) before advancing to the quarterfinals against the Helix Highlanders (14-9-3). With the win, Helix advances to play Escondido in the semifinals.


In boys water polo, Vista High continues its quest in the CIF Division I bracket. The Panthers (11-6) have a semifinal game against the La Jolla Vikings (4-8) at La Jolla High School on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The No. 3-seeded Panthers won their quarterfinal matchup against La Costa Canyon, 16-6, on Saturday (Nov. 14). It’s the second straight year the Vista boys water polo team has advanced to the semifinals. Last year, the Panthers fell 8-7 to the eventual 2014 CIF Division I champion, Carlsbad, in the semifinals.


Two area girls volleyball teams have advanced to the semifinals of the CIF postseason. Today (Nov. 17), the Guajome Park Academy girls volleyball team travels to Calexico to take on the top-seeded Bulldogs (23-10) in a Division IV semifinal. The Frogs (13-14) swept Castle Park 25-21, 25-14, 25-11 in a first-round playoff matchup before beating San Diego High Tech 26-27, 25-20, 25-16, 25-21 in the quarterfinals Friday (Nov. 13). Over at Mission Vista, the girls volleyball team plays at Olympian tonight in a Division II matchup. The Olympian Eagles (24-10) landed the top seed in the bracket, and the Timberwolves (24-10) are the No. 4 seed. It took Mission Vista five sets to beat Tri-City Christian in the first round before it went on to beat Otay Ranch 25-14, 22-25, 25-23, 25-10 on Friday, Nov. 13 in the quarterfinals.

    CIF Division I Semifinals
    La Jolla 7, Vista 6
    Note: It was the third time this season that La Jolla beat Vista by the score of 7-6. La Jolla plays Vahalla for the CIF title at La Jolla High on Nov. 21 at 4:45 p.m. Cathedral Catholic and Coronado play for the CIF Open Division title at 7 p.m.
