Pauma Valley Embezzlement

On 09/27/2017, the Tribal Council of the La Jolla Band of Luiseno Indians contacted the San Diego Sheriff’s Department to report suspicious financial transactions made by an employee. The follow up investigation for these allegations was assigned to the
Sheriff’s Cyber/Financial Crimes Unit.

The follow up investigation determined that 35 year old Destiny Nelson, who is a tribal member and former employee of the council, unlawfully used her position to obtain approximately $68,000 in tribal funds. Charges were filed by the North County Branch
of San Diego District Attorney’s Office and a warrant was issued.

On 04/19/2018, Nelson was arrested by deputies from the Valley Center Sub-Station for 508 PC – Embezzlement, 530.5 (A) PC – Identity Theft, 470 (D) PC – Forgery, and 487 (b) (3) PC – Grand Theft. Nelson was booked into the Vista Detention Facility.
