Carlsbad Reads Together
Join us in celebrating the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s classic Frankenstein by reading The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White. Throughout March, we’re hosting Frankenstein themed book discussionsauthor eventsmovies and more.
Meet Author Kiersten White
New York Times bestselling author Kiersten White will discuss and sign her book The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein, a creative reimagining of the classic story.

Spotlight on Classic Cinema: Frankenstein
In honor of Carlsbad Reads Together, revisit the 1931 horror classic starring Boris Karloff. Cultural Arts Manager Richard Schultz will share insights and trivia.

Genealogy Program
Like the heroine in The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein, our family trees include strong women. Jamie Lee McManus Mayhew will share the stories of women who braved the hardships of open land acquired through the 1862 Homestead Act. Learn how these women shaped the Western United States and where to find your ancestors’ homestead records.

Poetry Workshop
The Poetry of Politics and Current Events With Jackleen Holton
The perspective of poetry can bring out the humanity in a news story. We’ll mine the news of the day for poetic gold and learn how to write current events poems. A winner of Bellingham Review’s 49th Parallel Poetry Award, Jackleen Holton’s poems have appeared in Poet Lore, RHINO Poetry and more.
