SACRAMENTO – Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) has once again earned the title of “Taxpayer’s Ally” from the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association (HJTA). Out of 40 California State Senators, Senator Bates is one out of only nine who has earned an “A” grade on the HJTA Legislative Report Card in 2018.
For the 2018 legislative session, the HJTA focused on 11 bills including Senate Bill 152 which will impose a regressive tax on disadvantaged communities and Senate Bill 998 which will establish a new procedure for the discontinuation of water service for a delinquent residential account and will double the reconnection fees for consumers. The HJTA opposed both bills and Senator Bates voted against them.
“The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association is a respected organization that continues to defend our families from higher taxes. I’ll continue to be an advocate for California families and I’m honored to receive this recognition for the fourth time since I’ve been elected to serve in the state Senate.
“In 2018, the Legislature created a hailstorm of legislation that included tax and fee increases inserted in clever ways in the bill language. Some of these bills, such as SB 152, will hurt our disadvantaged communities as they take more money from those with low incomes. These families are barely surviving and are living paycheck-to-paycheck.  I will continue to defend all Californians from higher taxes as I expect 2019 to be another year of more tax proposals from the majority party,” said Senator Bates.

Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) represents the 36th Senate District in the California Legislature, which covers South Orange County, North San Diego County and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. She is the Senate Republican Leader.
