Cindy Tyler –The band was playing “Don’t Stop Believin’” but the message the audience was sending back was simply, “Don’t Stop!”  The hour was getting late and the band was on their third encore, but the more than 600 80’s fans who were gathered in Vista’s Moonlight Amphitheatre on Friday evening didn’t want the 80’s Prom to end.

Decked out in costumes ranging from retro 1980’s prom dresses to t-shirts honoring their favorite 80’s band to leg warmers and off the shoulder sweatshirts, no one was disappointed by the “gnarly party” presented by the Moonlight Cultural Foundation and the San Diego band, Beta Maxx.

In addition to the music and dancing, the evening featured the crowning of a Prom King and Queen, a “Beat the Geek” 80’s trivia quiz, and a costume contest where competitors showed off not only their best 80’s finery but their finest 80’s dance moves.  Sponsor Dr. Bronner’s provided samples of their magic soaps and the Moonlight Cultural Foundation provided a fun photo booth with 80’s props and a camera that allowed party goers to make hilarious boomerang gifts and share them with friends.

Kids who had no first-hand knowledge of the 80’s, women who were proud to still be able to get into their old prom dresses, and men who wore wigs to compensate for the tresses that had receded over the decades were among the party goers who joined band members in a “Footloose” conga line around the Amphitheatre.

Moonlight Cultural Foundation’s Director of Operations and Outreach, Jennifer Bradford, exclaimed, “What fun to see our community come out in full 80’s attire to celebrate an awesome flashback weekend!  This is what it’s all about — having a variety of exciting programming and using this venue year round.”  Bradford concluded, “At the Moonlight, there is something for everyone.”

The fun will continue at the Moonlight with more spring events, including two “Classic Albums Live” events in May, and the summer season of spectacular musicals beginning on June 13 and continuing through September.  Summer season tickets are selling at a record-breaking pace, and can be purchased on line, at the Civic Center Vistix office, or by calling Vistix at 760 724-2110.
